“Avoiding the News: Why Growing Numbers are Turning Away from Journalism and What Can be Done about It”
More and more people globally are disengaging from the news, despite unprecedented abundance and ease of access. Drawing on findings from his new book, Avoiding the News, co-authored with Ruth Palmer and Rasmus K. Nielsen, Benjamin Toff will explore why this is happening, the role played by technology platforms and what we can do about it. As their surveys and interviews in Spain, the UK and the US show, news avoidance is most common among disadvantaged groups, raising questions about what – and who – the news is for, and the future of journalism.
Benjamin Toff is Assistant Professor at the Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota. He studies media audiences and political engagement, public opinion, and changing journalistic practices.
Lunch will be provided for those who RSVP. RSVP Here
