Remembering Dean of Students Melanie Greer Huff

November 04, 2026

Dear Columbia Journalism School community:

It is with profound sadness that I share the news that our colleague, friend and Dean of Students Melanie Greer Huff has passed away. Our community is bound at this moment by the magnitude of this loss.

A graduate of Barnard College and Teachers College, Melanie devoted nearly four decades of her professional life to Columbia Journalism School, beginning as an office assistant in 1987. Over the years, she served in admissions, career and academic services and student life, ultimately becoming Dean of Students. She was a beloved presence at the School, guiding generations of students and taking joy in watching them grow into accomplished journalists. It is difficult to imagine the Journalism School without her.

We extend our love and deepest condolences to Melanie's family, friends and all those whose lives she touched. We will have more to share about memorializing her remarkable life and contributions to the School in the days ahead.

Sincerely,

Jelani Cobb
