Online Part-Time M.S. Program

Reporting begins here, and wherever you need to be.

Columbia Journalism School’s Online Part-Time M.S. Program allows students to continue working and living across the United States while earning their degree over two years. Through an Ivy League education grounded in reporting, they’ll learn to ask sharper questions, evaluate information critically and communicate complex ideas with clarity.

The course sequence takes students from foundational reporting and writing to journalism law, investigative techniques, image and sound and seminar work. Students also complete a Master’s Project developed with faculty guidance.

Courses are set for students in advance, giving them a clear path through the degree. Live classes generally meet once or twice a week for 90 minutes, depending on the course. Students should also plan time for interviews, research, reporting, writing and producing your stories and other assignments outside class.

The online classroom will work like a digital newsroom, bringing students and faculty together as stories develop. Students will pitch ideas, discuss work in progress and make editorial decisions with CJS faculty and classmates, gaining experience they can put to work immediately in their own reporting
