Professor Nina Berman Selected as 2025 Guggenheim Fellow

Photojournalism Professor Nina Berman, ’85 M.S., joins the 100th class of Guggenheim Fellows — recognizing her decades-long commitment to exposing injustice through powerful visual storytelling. 

Berman is one of 198 fellows selected this year from nearly 3,500 applicants across 53 disciplines. Since 1925, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has supported individuals who demonstrate exceptional creativity and scholarly achievement. 

Students on Newsroom Visit With Ty Lawson and Juan Manuel Benítez

Ty Lawson, Joan Konner Visiting Professor of Journalism, and Juan Manuel Benítez, Philip S. Balboni Professor of Professional Practice of Local Journalism, recently led students on a behind-the-scenes tour of Pix11 News in Midtown East. The visit offered a look at the inner workings of a live newsroom and insights into covering breaking news in real time. 

Robe Imbriano’s Criminal to Screen at the Public Theater

Professor Robe Imbriano's award-winning animated musical short documentary “Criminal” will be showcased at the Public Theater on May 20, 2025. The 19-minute film, featuring music and lyrics by Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, tells the story of individuals jailed before trial, due to their inability to pay for bail.

Following the screening, Stew and Heidi will perform live, and a talkback session with Imbriano, Stew, Heidi, and animator Thomas Curtis will dive deeper into the film’s impactful narrative.

"The Good Whale" Receives Peabody Nod

Audio Professor Daniel Alarcón’s podcast “The Good Whale,” produced by Serial Productions and The New York Times, earned a 2025 Peabody Award nomination. 

The podcast follows the dramatic story of efforts to free the orca from the movie Free Willy, questioning the ethics of keeping animals in captivity. 

Storytelling That Confronts Environmental Crisis

Dean Duy Linh Tu, ‘99 M.S., recently screened his documentary Troubled Waters in Woods Hole, MA, focusing on the impact of climate change, over-regulation, and pollution on New England fisheries. A post-screening Q&A featured experts, including scientists, policymakers, and fishermen, discussing how to preserve East Coast fisheries in a changing environment.

Reflecting on War Reporting and Change in Kosovo

Photojournalist and Adjunct Professor Alan Chin recently spoke at the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network’s (BIRN) Reporting House about his experiences covering the war in Kosovo. Chin, who captured a powerful image from the funeral of KLA fighter Ali Paçarizi in 1998, shared stories of documenting protests, refugee camps, and the aftermath of violence on civilians.
