Lunchtime Seminar on Solutions Journalism
On September 23 at 12:15 p.m.: meet Shia Levitt, ‘04 M.S., of News Ambassador. She’ll discuss the burgeoning “solutions journalism” industry and best practices for being a part of it, especially in the climate reporting space.
J-NOW Lecture: Anup Kaphle and Sophie Schmidt
Editor-in-chief for Rest of World Anup Kaphle, ‘08 M.S., and its founder and publisher Sophie Schmidt will be in conversation with Dean of Academic Affairs Duy Linh Tu on Tuesday, September 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Lecture Hall.
New Book from Columbia Global Reports
On September 24, Columbia Global Reports and the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New York are hosting an event to celebrate the publication of Cameron Abadi’s new book, “Climate Radicals: Why Our Environmental Politics Isn’t Working.” Abadi, a deputy editor at Foreign Policy, explores the impact of climate activism and legislation.
Oakes Awards Ceremony Celebration
On September 23, Pulitzer Hall will host the John B. Oakes Award for Distinguished Environmental Journalism. The winner, “Deforestation, Inc.” was reported by 2015 alum Scilla Alecci, ‘15 M.S., for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
Academic Dean Duy Linh Tu will be moderating a panel with Alecci, Deb Nelson of Reuters, and Susie Cagle on behalf of The Marshall Project.
From PA to EP: Alumni Collaborate on Climate Series
Jacob Templin, '09 M.S., Professor Sebastian Tuinder, '21 M.S., Anup Kaphle, '08 M.S., Juanita Ceballos, '13 M.S., Debadrita Sur, '23 M.S., and Dean Tu, '99 M.S., contributed to an investigation for Rest of World and Context Newsroom. “Gig Workers Rising” is a two-part series examining the impact of climate xTchange on global workers.
Climate in the Classroom
Last week, students participated in a Q&A session with Eliza Klein, the Clean Energy Program Manager for WE ACT for Environmental Justice. Starting September 22, members of Marguerite Holloway and Nushin Rashidian’s climate reporting class will be covering Climate Week events across New York City for publication in Columbia News Service.
Also: Professor Gisela Winckler is returning as the Climate Expert in Residence for Fall 2024.
Every reporter will be reporting on climate change and this network creates a critically important community – for now and for the future.
