Columbia Journalism School Faculty and Alumni to Watch This Award Season

Their work in documentary film, audio and storytelling is being recognized across major industry honors.

Academy Awards

Adjunct Assistant Professor of Journalism Juan Arredondo, ‘20 M.S. Documentary, earned a Best Documentary Short Film nomination as co-producer of “Armed Only With A Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud.” The film provides a look into Renaud’s decade-spanning career as a journalist before he became the first American journalist killed while reporting on the Russo-Ukraine war. Professor Arredondo screened the film in Pulitzer Hall in November 2025, followed by a conversation with Lucy Westcott, Chief Emergencies Officer for the Committee to Protect Journalists, moderated by Azmat Khan, Director of the Simon and June Li Center for Global Journalism.

Bess Kargman, ‘08 M.S., chronicled the life, career and activism of Diane Warren in the 2025 documentary “Diane Warren: Relentless.” An original song, “Dear Me,” written by Warren and performed by Kesha for the film was nominated for Best Original Song. 

Joshua Seftel, ‘03 National Arts Journalism Program, directed “All The Empty Rooms.” Nominated for Best Documentary Short Film, “All The Empty Rooms” follows Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp’s journey across the U.S. to capture and memorialize the bedrooms of children killed in school shootings.

Golden Globes

Jay Shaylor, ‘03 M.S., Executive Producer of NPR’s Up First, was nominated for Best Podcast at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards.
