Nikkei and Columbia Journalism School Announce $100,000 Scholarship
The five-year scholarship program supports the educational advancement of aspiring data and business journalists from Asia.
Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Nikkei, Inc., parent company of the Financial Times, the publisher of the Nikkei, and the Nikkei Asian Review, announced today a new $100,000 scholarship for a student who is a resident in Asia. The Columbia-Nikkei Scholarship will be awarded annually for the next five years to exemplary candidates who wish to specialize in data and business journalism. Each September, the school will announce whether it seeks scholarship applicants interested in business and data journalism.
“It is our great pleasure and honor to form this new partnership with the Columbia Journalism School,” said Naotoshi Okada, President & CEO, Nikkei Inc. “We believe Columbia’s strong leadership in the area of journalism and firm commitment to the international regime of freedom of expression can enhance our Global & Growth Strategy together with the Financial Times not only in the Asia-Pacific region but globally.”
Nikkei has more than 40 companies in newspapers and publishing, broadcasting, events, database services and index businesses. Their 280 editorial staff operate across 37 bureaus overseas.
“We are honored to announce this exciting partnership with Nikkei,” said Steve Coll, dean and Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism. “Nikkei is demonstrating its leadership in the profession, and in preparing journalism’s leaders of tomorrow.”
The Columbia-Nikkei Scholarship comes at a time when the Columbia Journalism School recently unveiled a three-semester Master of Science in Data Journalism degree. Students enrolled in this track will receive the hands-on training they need to report data-driven stories in the public interest. The new offering does not require prior experience with data or coding.
Columbia also offers a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in business and economics journalism. Students learn the fundamentals of economic theory, accounting, and markets. The M.A. imparts a deep understanding of economic data, while staying rooted in the journalistic process.
The application deadline for both programs is December 15, 2017. Students who qualify for the scholarship and who apply for financial aid will be automatically considered for this and other scholarship opportunities. No separate application is required.
