Meet James Jamu, ‘26 M.S., a documentary filmmaker.

September 29, 2025

Where are you from and what program are you pursuing?

I am Malawian-Zimbabwean, and I am pursuing the M.S. Documentary specialization.

What inspired you to attend Columbia Journalism School?

I was made aware of Columbia Journalism School by my former employer and mentor, Jeffrey
Barbee, who is a Pulitzer grantee. Having worked as a journalist for 5 years around Southern Africa, I felt like it was time to expand my visual storytelling. Columbia’s reputation as the best journalism school in the world attracted me because I wanted to learn from the best in the industry and build lifelong connections.

After the J-School, what would you like to do?

I would like to return to Africa and be part of a generation of storytellers committed to sharing more nuanced stories on the continent. I am also interested in academic research of the documentary form and the experimental modes of storytelling that enrich decolonial discourses.

What is your favorite activity/location in NYC so far?

I enjoy exploring parks around the city. My favorite park thus far is Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
