Professor Daniel Alarcón elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Daniel Alarcón, Associate Professor of Journalism, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences

He joins some of the world’s most accomplished leaders from academia, the arts, public policy and research in this prestigious honorary society and independent research center.

"This recognition came as a complete surprise. I'm so proud to be in the company of all these great minds, artists, writers, thinkers whose work I've admired for years,” said Alarcón. “All I ever wanted when I was younger was to be part of the conversation, and I guess this means that in some ways, somehow, I managed it. It's a huge honor."

This year’s 250 newly elected members are grouped in thirty-one sections and. organized within five classes. Section Two of Class Five — Leadership, Policy, and Communications — is led by Professor Alarcón for his work with National Public Radio and Columbia Journalism School.

The Academy counts among its members Dean Jelani Cobb, Class of 2023, Nicholas Lemann, Class of 2010 and former University President Lee C. Bollinger, Class of 1992.

This year’s cohort includes six other Columbia professors: Quarraisha Abdool Karim, Professor of Epidemiology at CUMC; Nim Tottenham, Professor of Psychology and chair of Columbia’s Department of Psychology; Serena Ng, Edwin W. Rickert Professor of Economics; Fredrick Cornelius Harris, Class of 1933 Professor of Political Science; Eric Talley, Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law; Mamadou Diouf, Leitner Professor of African Studies; Gauri Viswanathan, Director of the South Asia Institute and Class of 1933 Professor of English and Comparative Literature; and Paul Beatty, Associate Professor of Writing.
