Transforming Coverage: CJS and the Dart Center’s 2025 Childhood Forced Migration Journalism Project

Meet Columbia Journalism School community members tackling global migration, trauma and human rights.

Columbia Journalism School is deeply committed to addressing global challenges through education, research, and partnerships. This year, alumni and current students are actively involved in the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma’s new Reporting Institute on Childhood and Forced Migration in Europe.

The initiative, in collaboration with the Columbia Global Paris Center and the Mailman School of Public Health, aims to enhance reporting on children and families impacted by forced migration and displacement. The journalists involved include:

  • Natasha Caragnano, '24 M.A. Politics, is an Italian journalist specializing in international affairs with a focus on China. Her thesis on the Chinese feminist diaspora won the Jean Anderson Social Justice Journalism Award.
  • Monica Montero, ‘23 M.S., is a journalist and visual storyteller based in Spain. Her work focuses on migration, human rights, and the protection of cultural heritage. 
  • Valentine Pasquesoone, '13 M.S., is a French multimedia journalist covering international news and feature stories for Franceinfo.fr. Her migration-focused work includes reporting on undocumented communities, separated families in the U.S., and refugees from Ukraine and Syria in Europe. 
  • Sara Selva Ortiz, '24 M.A. Politics, is a Spanish audio reporter and producer based in Madrid. Her recent work has focused on migration and integration, LGBTQ+ issues and protest movements. 
  • Gagandeep Singh, '25 M.A. Politics, is an investigative journalist at BBC News in Punjab, India. He has reported extensively on the criminal justice system, forced and illegal migration, human rights violations, children's health, public sector corruption and issues concerning the Sikh community.
  • Claudia Steenhard, '25 M.A. Politics, is a Danish journalist, ethnographer and Fulbright Scholar.

These individuals, both alumni and current students, represent a new wave of journalism that is not only grounded in rigorous academic training but also in a commitment to addressing pressing global issues.
