Behind the Scenes on Election Day at Columbia Journalism School

Desks, Production Rooms and Field Reporting: Students Covering the U.S. Presidential Election.

November 05, 2024

CJS students have been rigorously developing their research and reporting skills in the initial months of their program. In an age where misinformation can shape public perception and undermine democratic processes, student-led teams aim to empower voters with the facts they need to make informed decisions.

Here’s where you can find their work:

Columbia News Service

Find in-depth articles and analyses about the election, highlighting the diverse perspectives that matter from the Big Apple and across the plains.

Election Day Live Reporting

Another way to stay informed on Election Day is through the Live Blog on CNS, which will be updated throughout the day with real-time results, expert insights and on-the-ground reporting — all in one place.

Decision 2024 Live Broadcast

Tune in for "Down for the Count:" a Decision 2024 live broadcast on Election Day at 9 p.m. ET, as students close the day with key stories from field reporters. This broadcast offers a unique opportunity for students to run a full newsroom during a presidential election.

Follow the Numbers

Part of the day’s coverage will feature the Data Desk, utilizing journalistic AI technology available to Columbia Journalism students. This student-run tool will deliver visualizations throughout the day, helping viewers grasp the current state of the polls through data.

More Coverage
