Large language models are known to make up facts -- a phenomenon that has come to be known as "hallucination" -- which makes them difficult to effectively use for many journalistic tasks. But with the right guardrails, journalists can use them to analyze data quickly without sacrificing accuracy. In this session we will learn how to get large language models to produce code that will analyze and visualize data for us and then we'll talk about how we can design new editorial processes to ensure that this kind of analysis is correct and usable in a news context.

Dhrumil Mehta is Associate Professor in Data Journalism and Deputy Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University. Previously, he was a data journalist at FiveThirtyEight where he analyzed data on topics ranging from COVID-19 to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Mehta has produced innovative data-driven projects, including an interactive quiz on gun policy and research on Hurricane Maria media coverage. He has also developed data resources and taught data journalism and data science at Columbia and Harvard.

Mehta holds a master's in computer science and a bachelor's in philosophy from Northwestern University.
