Out of the Picture: Screening and Discussion

Join us for a film screening and conversation about the state of arts criticism today.

While countless films have been made about artists, Out of the Picture is the first documentary about art critics in the United States. Directed by Mary Louise Schumacher, former art critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, it follows several innovative art critics living through a period of transformation for both art and media.

What does it mean to write about the arts? What is the role of criticism? Where can critics publish these days? And why?

A panel discussion will follow the screening, featuring:

Nicholas Dames, Columbia Professor of English & Comparative Literature; co-editor-in-chief of Public Books;

Margo Jefferson, Pulitzer Prize-winning critic and Professor, Columbia School of the Arts (J-School '71);

Hrag Vartanian, Founder and former editor-in-chief of Hyperallergic and featured in Out of the Picture;

Moderated by Prof. Alisa Solomon, Columbia Journalism School.
