A deferral request can only be submitted before the first day of new student orientation.
Columbia Journalism School does not offer automatic deferrals of admission, and deferrals of any kind are not commonly granted. It is expected that admitted students enroll for the year to which they apply. Formal requests are considered by the Admissions Committee on a case-by-case basis only for the following circumstances.
- Mandatory military deployment
- Inability to secure a visa after making substantial and timely efforts
- Fulbright funding for the following year
- Birth of a child
- Students who are expecting a child within their first semester of study should request a deferral before their first semester of enrollment begins. It is not possible to request a deferral or parental accommodations after the first day of classes in the first semester.
Supporting documentation will be required.
Should a deferral be granted:
- Submission of the enrollment fee is required in order to secure a space in the class.
- It will be valid for one year.
- Applicants will need to reapply for J-School funding, as funding is not guaranteed.
