What are some of the things you've carried through your career from your time at CJS, and what have you applied to your role here at Elle?
What I carried with me from my experience at the J-School, apart from being in New York City, which was a huge help to be at the center of where everything in culture and fashion happens, was RW one [Reporting and Written Word]. Out of all the beats one could possibly have, I was granted Midtown West. As somebody who was interested in fashion, it was easy for me to look at retail and report on the fashion industry from the center of it. That allowed me to really go boots-on-the ground in school and make a lot of the connections that I have today. Additionally, it was where my internship was located while I studied there.
What advice might you have for somebody who is either at the J School and looking to enter into fashion journalism or somebody who is looking to apply to the J-School?
My best advice for somebody interested in applying to the J-School would be to be curious, and I think that's the most important characteristic that a journalist should have. The advice I'd give to somebody curious about entering the fashion world would be to go out and meet people. This is not an exclusive industry. It can be quite inclusive, but you really have to get out there and get out of your comfort zone. You can meet anyone, as long as you leave your apartment!
When you were at the J-School, was this what you envisioned doing?
I was definitely always interested in fashion. When I was at the J-School, they instilled in us the importance of being what they called a 'backpack journalist' — specializing in everything from digital media to video and social [media] storytelling. We were really cognizant when I was there in 2012 and 2013 about the advent of digital media and the importance of digital storytelling.
Do you have any thoughts or advice on people who may be at the J-School and want to work in roles that aren't traditional journalism?
Get on social media, build your brand, and learn how to shoot and edit video. For the next generation of journalists, having expertise and the skill set for video and social media is key.
How is fashion journalism important to you?
I like to say everybody gets dressed. So I think we can all be interested in fashion to some degree as a form of self-expression and a way to share your creativity with the world.
Is there anything else you want to share about J-School or your role?
I'm about to be on my way to go to the first show of New York Fashion Week, but I wouldn't be where I am without the J-School. It taught me everything I know about being an intrepid reporter and a journalist, and I am very grateful.
