The early 1990s and the transformation of the American media landscape

The early 1990s were the last golden age of print media, seeing the continued strong presence of local, regional and national magazines and news media, but changes were on the horizon: talk radio exploded and cable became a major factor. At the same time, “populism” became a watchword in American politics. What was the connection between the rise in new media and the populist wave? Was it driving it or merely giving it expression? And is our moment just an intensification of that earlier one?

John Ganz is a renowned political writer with work in the New York Times, Washington Post, the Guardian and elsewhere. He is author of the popular substack, Unpopular Front. His first book, When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s, came out in June to widespread acclaim.

Lunch will be provided for those who RSVP. RSVP Here.
