Dr. Marc-William Palen (University of Exeter) will be joining the Communications Colloquium on Monday April 14 (12:00 - 13:30) to discuss his second book, Pax Economica: Left-Wing Visions of a Free Trade World, (Princeton University Press, 2024).
This fascinating study explores the intersections of global capitalism, anti-imperialism, and peace activism from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century – arguing that the global order was shaped more by American industrial policy than British "Free Trade." The book was recently listed in the Financial Times 'Best Books of the Year,' as well as the 2024 'Best Books' review by the New Yorker.
Prof. Kim Phillips-Fein (Columbia University) will share her expert commentary on the book and facilitate the audience discussion. Prof. Phillips-Fein is a renowned historian of American politics and political economy, whose interests include the history of political institutions and ideas, the history of labor and capitalism and the history of New York City. Her articles have appeared in many scholarly and popular publications, including the Journal of American History, Labor: The Working-Class History of the Americas, The New York Times, The New Republic and The Nation.
The event will take place in Pulitzer (Journalism School), Room 607B (6th floor).
