Book Talk: Murder the Truth
David Enrich talks with Margaret Sullivan about his new book and the fight over the First Amendment.
Margaret Sullivan and the Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security invite you to a book talk with New York Times deputy investigations editor David Enrich. His new book, “Murder the Truth: Fear, the First Amendment, and a Secret Campaign to Protect the Powerful,” is about the First Amendment and recent challenges to the Supreme Court’s 1964 decision in New York Times v. Sullivan.
The landmark Sullivan ruling limited public figures’ ability to sue news organizations for libel. It sets for them a higher standard of proof – actual malice – that does not apply to everyday Americans, who must only prove that a statement was published with reckless disregard for its falsity. Enrich’s book argues that fresh attacks on the actual malice standard by powerful Americans are weaponizing the legal system for attacks on journalists.
Pre-registration strongly advised! The first 20 attendees to arrive will receive a copy of “Murder the Truth.” This event is open to CJS students, faculty, and staff only.
