Ming Fan(Cissie Fan)
Ming Fan is an award-winning senior investigative TV producer, former editor-in-chief of Insight, an influential interview program at China Central TV, and an independent documentary filmmaker. She excels in combining sensitive storytelling, in-depth interviews, and political analysis to tackle challenging and controversial issues in China. Her reporting has covered high-level corruption, LGBTQ issues, SARS, domestic violence, judicial injustice, environmental pollution, medical disputes, migrant workers' wage claims, college entrance exam fraud, youth depression and suicide, and counter-terrorism. She has won multiple Chinese Documentary Academy Awards.
One of her directorial works, Under the Dome, an independent documentary focused on China's air pollution, co-produced with renowned Chinese anchorwoman Chai Jing, garnered 300 million views within just one week of its release. It deeply shaped environmental awareness and significantly influenced Chinese environmental and carbon emission policies, sparking worldwide discussion on China's environmental issues.
Her latest documentary, The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru, which she co-directed and co-produced, premiered at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival's Gala Screenings and was released in Chinese theaters in September 2024. It has been selected by China for submission in the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
She was a Mason Fellow and earned her MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School. Currently, she is a visiting scholar and adjunct assistant professor at Columbia Journalism School and serves as a judge for the 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards in June 2024.
