Where the Class of 2022 Landed

In 2022, our students joined 160 companies.

As of Aug. 24, 2022, 80 percent of the Class of 2022 had post-graduate plans lined up (276/345). This figure was gathered from our 300 students who graduated in May 2022 and 45 students who graduated in August 2022.

Further breakdown shows the following:

May Grads with employment plans after graduation:

  • By June 10, 2022: 68 percent (205/300)
  • By Aug. 24, 2022:  81 percent (243/300)

August Grads (33/45 students):

  • By Aug. 24, 2022:  73 percent (33/45)

Overall - May and August grads (276/345):

  • By Aug. 24, 2022: 80 percent

Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the job market for our students in the summer of 2022 was on the rebound. Students found jobs and internships in newspapers, audio and video newsrooms and digital-first publications across the United States and world, from Bangor, Me., to Portland, Ore.; from Miami to London to Jerusalem.

In 2022, one-third of the graduating class came from outside the United States. Nearly all of our international students are legally permitted to work for one year in the U.S. after graduation on an Optional Practical Training (OPT) visa. International students in Columbia’s M.S. Data Journalism program and dual degree M.S. Journalism and M.S. Computer Science programs qualify for longer-term OPT-STEM visas.

Our international students are competitive in the U.S. job market for short-term internships and positions while on OPT, but will find the landscape challenging. Longer-term work authorization after OPT (also known as sponsorship) is rarely granted, so international students should expect to return to their home countries at the conclusion of their OPT period. Once back home, our international graduates typically find that their Columbia degree has made them highly marketable.
