If you know how to code you have an upper hand in journalism. That’s the thing that surprised me the most: the skills I have from my undergraduate degree in computer science, which I thought were not remotely connected to journalism before coming to the Journalism School, are now connected.
I applied for the Google Summer Scholarship and they really liked my work because it has a balance of computational journalism and field reporting. I’ll train at Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., for a week this summer, learning all the new technologies and tools that Google has for journalists. Then I’ll go to St. Petersburg, Fla., and work with the Poynter Institute to develop its tool kits, data and visualization skills.
In the fall, I’ll return to the Journalism School as an Energy and Environment Reporting Fellow where I’ll be working with an experienced team of journalists and merging my two passions: science and investigative reporting.
