Fact Checking 101

October 16, 2023
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
America/New_York
Pulitzer Hall, 2950 Broadway, New York, NY 10027 World Room

Accuracy and precision are key to the work journalists do. With increasing audience demands for immediate and constant content as well as fake news and global skepticism about the veracity of reporting from news outlets, it is critical that we get it right the first time. Join veteran fact checker Alice Milliken as they discuss the basics: what needs to be fact-checked, how to identify trustworthy sources and how to treat people with care during the process. Alice will also discuss special considerations that arise when fact checking investigative and audio work.

Alice Milliken (they/them) is the fact checker, head of fellowships, professional development and governance lead at The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) in London. They fact-checked TBIJ's award-winning podcast Smoke Screen and was an editor/producer of The Tip Off podcast. Alice taught radio journalism at City, University of London and has nearly a decade of experience working as a journalist for print and broadcast.
