Martin Baron, Retired Executive Editor of the Washington Post, to Receive the Columbia Journalism Award

Martin “Marty” Baron has been named the 2021 winner of the Columbia Journalism Award. Baron will address the 2021 Columbia Journalism School graduating class at this year’s graduation ceremony on May 19, 2021.

Baron will receive the school’s highest honor in recognition of his celebrated 45-year career as one of the most respected editors in journalism, leading several newspapers to earn Pulitzer Prizes and serving as a national champion for press freedom.

Baron served as executive editor of The Washington Post from January 2013 to February 2021, overseeing a massive expansion of its newsroom staff and 10 Pulitzer Prizes, including one for revelations about secret surveillance by the National Security Agency. Prior to his arrival at the Post, Baron was editor of the Boston Globe for eleven and half years, during which the paper won six Pulitzer Prizes. A 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning Globe investigation into clergy sex abuse and a cover-up by the Catholic Church became the basis of the Academy Award-winning movie “Spotlight.”

Before the Globe, Baron held editorial leadership positions at the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Miami Herald. With the bilingual (fluent Spanish-speaking) Baron at its helm, the Miami Herald won the 2001 Pulitzer for breaking news for its coverage of a pre-dawn raid by federal agents to retrieve Elián González from his relatives in Miami and return him to his father in Cuba amid a long and politically charged custody battle. Born and raised in Tampa, Baron started his career at the Miami Herald in 1976 as a state reporter and then as a business writer.

Baron personally has won numerous awards for his editorial leadership including the National Press Foundation Editor of the Year in 2004 and the 2019 Founders Award for Excellence in Journalism by the International Center for Journalists. In 2012, Baron was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
