Dorian Benkoil has more than two decades of experience in digital media, and in traditional media before that. An award-winning journalist and MBA, he is co-founder and principal Teeming Media, a New York-based strategic digital media business and editorial consultancy focused on helping publishers and media technology companies define and meet business and thought leadership messaging objectives. He has directed teams to multiple awards, and helped direct teams he oversees as well as clients’ in methods to increase audience and revenues by many multiples while preserving the integrity of their publications and products. As a managing producer at ABCNews.com, general manager at Fairchild Publications’ Internet division and editorial director for mediabistro.com he created new content areas and strategies that led to explosive growth in audience, memberships, email newsletters, video and paid content while bringing new revenues and profits.
He devised and teaches courses in the media business and technologies at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business (City University of New York). He has devised and taught more media, marketing and technology business classes at the graduate level at Fordham University’s Gabelli School of Business, Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, Zicklin, and elsewhere. He has constructed and executed multiple industry and educational seminars and training programs.
Dorian is also an award-winning (SJA, SAJA, Mirror Awards) journalist who has been a reporter, managing editor and foreign correspondent for ABC News, Newsweek, and The Associated Press and who is an expert commentator, speaker and trainer on media and a regular contributor to the newsletter of The Verticals Collective, which he helps run, and for other well-known publications, including Campaign U.S., MediaShift, Digiday, the Poynter Institute and many other respected venues. He is a frequent source for media and business publications and outlets. He is a top-tier judge for the Mirror Awards and has judged other prestigious media industry awards such as the Pulitzers and the National Magazine Awards.
Dorian is an MBA honors graduate of the Zicklin School of Business, a former Fulbright Fellow in Japan (Sophia University) and a graduate (communication and international relations) of Stanford University. He has passed a government proficiency exam in Japanese and speaks French, as well as what he believes is passable English. In Japan, he was the only man and the only westerner in two cooking classes. He loves dogs and dim sum.
